It’s very rare that you ever see anyone wearing the patch vest. Most people opt for a jacket instead. Technically, you’re not supposed to wear anything other than one large patch on the back of the Official Red Shirt-Jac, but few people follow the rule.

The vest is a good display piece, but a blanket is better. A few people still use patch blankets. The vest can fill up quickly with Cub Scout patches and there will be little room left for the Boy Scout patches later on.

I used a red Woolrich shirt-jac for years until I grew too round for the jacket. It was covered with Camporee patches, patches from historical hikes, etc. etc. I had so many patches I just never bothered to sew them back on. I opted instead for a corkboard and had them on display in my office for a number of years. The only patches I wear on my red jacket now are Rangers’ patch from Philmont Scout Ranch and my Black Bull patch also from Philmont.
