Hog Hunting with Pitbulls?
Me and my friend decided to buy 2 male pitbull puppies this past weekend, and we plan on taking them hog hunting as soon as there old enough. First of all, are pitbulls good dogs for this? Ive seen a lot on youtube. And we have gone hunting without dogs many times. Second, what “training” can we do to help the dogs know what to do when they see a hog? And last, what equipment would we need to take on the hunt, and does anyone know any good places to go hunting hog in south florida? Thank you for any help it will be greatly appreciated.
My all time favorite is the Catahoula Cur. It is in their bloodline to be hog dogs. They bay, catch, hold, and learn quickly how to avoid the hogs. They are easily trained, easily worked with. And they will never turn on you like a pit bull is noted for.
My family had cattle and hogs back in the days of open range and we ran them in the swamplands. The water would come up most years and the cattle and hogs had to be flat boated out when they still had ridges to get on. The dogs and horses made it possible to do it.
Ever see a 90 lb dog latch onto a 300 lb plus boar hog and hold him? He grabs the hogs jowls and holds on. The hog may drag him for close to a hundred yards, but will at some point give out and stand.
Even when we weren’t boating them out, hogs had to be marked after the sows had a litter and the dog would find the hogs, bay them up, and catch on command. We would then mark what needed to be marked and castrate any boars that we wanted to make meat hogs out of later on.
Any one that likes to watch dogs hunt would love to see a good hog dog in action. But it didn’t go as planned at times. We walked up to some hogs that were bayed up one day, and a large boar broke out and charged, the dogs couldn’t stop him quick enough and he ran over my cousin. In a second my cousin was cut from above his ankle almost to his groin. It barely missed the main artery in his groin by fractions of an inch. If memory serves me correct it took a good deal better then 100 stitches to sew him back up. He was extremely lucky because the nearest doctor was 25 miles away after you got out of the swampland.
