Children Behind Barbed Wire
Children behind barbed wire
Between 1949 and 1951, my mother Sister Hazel and I lived in a small transit camp in El Ballah a mile Suez Canal. The camp was surrounded by barbed wire and guarded by soldiers British. Whichever direction you looked, there was nothing but sand flat and hard and the occasional boat passing through the Suez Canal. For adults, there must be been hell and all they had in common was the desire to be anywhere but El Ballah. For us kids, however, was fantastic. Only went to school in the morning and afternoon, were allowed to swim in the canal. We lived in shorts or bathing suits and we only managed to church on Sunday. I could spend hours just watching the cargo ships and passenger ships passing through the entire channel and dreaming about what it would be like to work on them. The area had once a huge salt lake filled with shallow water of the Red Sea and reduced at certain times of year. The sand was not yet full of small shells marinas. Many biblical scholars now believe that Moses led his people to the promised land through El Ballah and the "sea voyage" took place just north of the camp.
Our mother worked in the field teacher, but the school was for young children. Our school was about 20 miles south on a huge military camp near the city of Ismailia, on Lake Timsah. Timsah in Arabic means crocodile but never saw any. Timsah Lake was a real beach and there were some sailboats that could be used. We like to travel to Ismailia in a canvas covered truck tonne of three or a small jeep with wooden benches seats and no seatbelts. Once aboard the truck, the back door was securely closed and stay away from her when the driver stopped suddenly. Sometimes the drivers let us go over and sit by his side as there was little or no traffic on the roads of the desert. He even drive the truck, but my feet could barely reach the pedals. Occasionally, military police pull us over because we were bored and slink back to our seats for pilots would not be a burden. On one occasion, they were arrested because a movie was made. It is called The Cairo d Roa and was about to drug smuggling. The two main stars of the film, Lawrence Harvey and Eric Portman, stood beside the road as they passed by.
The road between the two camps ran along the Suez Canal, a railroad and canal smaller. The small channel was known as the Freshwater Canal was originally dug to bring fresh water to the men digging the main channel. If there is a rule that was never broken, went swimming or entering the Canal Water Dulce. The water was anything but sweet and contains many life threatening bacteria. The premises may have been bathed, washed and defecated on it, but the Europeans had to avoid like the plague (which probably was). By contrast, the Suez Canal very safe with a slow stream that flows south of the Mediterranean. Another rule that was never broken for petting stray dogs, especially when they were foaming at the mouth.
The highlight of my life in Egypt was a visit by bus to the Pyramids and Sphinx many miles away from Giza. I remember going to the right in the middle of the Great Pyramid and climb the exterior sandstone blocks. The Sphinx was buried almost in the sand, and Cairo was only visible on the horizon. Visiting Egypt forty years later, I was amazed that the city and its suburbs had spread to were only a stone's throw. The camel drivers and souvenir vendors, however, were the same. Even as I write this, someone will be screaming at some Brit, "Hey Johnnie! Want to buy postcards dirty? You want my sister?" When you live in England? Arsenal? Sheffield Wednesday?
Once a month, a collection of wine from one of the largest fields and may order the books in the UK. A book I remember is' Scouting for Boys "Lord Baden-Powell. From him I learned how to track footprints in the sand and how to find out how you are riding a bicycle its brands of tires. A wobble produce two tire tracks that gradually merge into the direction the bike is traveling. Discover how to take secret messages in a cleft stick and hide when you have to spy on people. Did you know that liars always walk with your feet stretched out. What a book! The man does not a genius or a complete fool.
It was not always paradise. One of the teachers at our school was a popular American nun called Sister Anthony. One day, an Egyptian who entered the school with a gun, asked him to be quite firmly and shot. Almost simultaneously, a main hall in the field led his family on a shopping trip to Port Said, a village in the Canal entrance. They were attacked by a mob, and although the family escaped, was killed and dragged through the streets. This was one of the "forgotten wars" of Britain in which many soldiers and civilians lost their lives, and not always in the hands of the locals. It is often made friend of the camp guards and I remember one in particular. It is used to make our comics and jokes. When an officer approached the vehicle at the entrance of the camp, would raise the barrier and mourn. 'On your marks! Here is the measure of Deadwood City! Indians beware! "One night when I was out of service and drunk, stumbled into the barbed wire fence. He ignored the orders of the young guards sent to investigate, and to believe an insurgent, he fired. The two guards to protect your body from the night until an ambulance arrived from another camp. Later, they told us what a terrible experience that had been for them. We missed him.
My hero in the field was a former prisoner of war who called Joe Armenia. Soldier managed canteen and shop and lived in a small room next to the building. Some nights we would sit outside his room and listen to their stories about the war. He had served in the German Navy and had shot in the leg. On special occasions, we are shown the gunshot wound and we gape in amazement. Armenia Joe was a gentle man, generous with his time and money. Always we feel safe in his presence and he never came close to a father.
But the main purpose of this trip to the past is to inform you of some of things that the kids got up a. We had a band and girls can participate in as they do not want to play kiss chase. I can not imagine what today's health and safety laws that make some of the things we did. To guide our activities, I used some of the rules that had to obey, there that have broken every one of them.
Children must be protected from the sun and wearing appropriate footwear
What a reasonable standard, for the daily temperature could reach 46 ° and the soldiers often died of heat stroke. In India, who wore helmets marrow (topees), which made us watch mobile fungi, but were not issued to us in Egypt, so ignore it. As for footwear, although the premises could shuffle why do we not with bare feet, then? Foot along the Suez Canal, which slid down the sloped concrete edge and cut his foot on a piece of broken glass. As I limped back to camp, I made an interesting discovery. At first, the blood came pouring out of court, but within minutes he had left entirely as if nothing had happened. Our feet must be very tough for a deep cut to heal so quickly.
Children should not interfere with military activities
I'm not quite sure what we were going to do. I know we've changed the direction of the signs around the field in order to confuse to visit the military personnel, and sat in the trees shooting catapults the soldiers on parade, but other than that usually stay off the road. There was however, a field area that fascinated us. Two planes into disuse after World War 2 was near the perimeter fence at the rear of the field, and were used for training purposes. The use of heavy equipment and guns, the soldiers climbed in and out of them, while a sergeant barked, whose name, incidentally, was the largest. The plane with its broken fuselage is out of bounds, but that does not worry us, and we spent hours climbing all over them, sitting in the cockpit, moving levers and turning knobs. Invariably, we would be persecuted and fled like rats through the desert and back to the camp.
The wrecked aircraft inspired one of the strangest things ever made and almost ends in disaster. We build our own airplane, a glider, fruit boxes and sheets of plywood for wings. Our flying machine with two wheels and a tail plane, and I've never forgotten the day he was released from the sloping roof of the hospital. I do not remember what was used the roof of the hospital, maybe it was an insurance policy? And why was chosen to be the pilot? The plane was going to slide down the roof and glide gracefully to land. Unfortunately, just slid down the roof edge and fell to the ground, where he buried his nose in the sand. I catapulted out, but the sand was soft and deep and cushioned my fall. After the first flight without success, which went from aeronautical engineering to show business. We turn our aircraft in a position of Punch and Judy, and put on a show for young children.
Children do not fraternize with the soldiers or staff civil.
Now this was really unfair. I know our catapults fired at the soldiers but they were very funny and taught us a lot of skills interesting that we do not get in school. For example, he showed us how to cheat in the game, how to load a rifle, and pedals to use when driving a truck three tons. He also learned to pronounce Arabic words and important phrases and gestures that must accompany them. Sudanese workers were particularly friendly and taught us how to play drums and finger native percussion techniques. I must have driven my mother crazy practice at the dining table. And then there were Captain Marvel comic books, the soldiers gave us. Captain Marvel Superman put in the shade and do not have to hide in a phone booth or wearing underwear outside of jump suit. No, just screamed Captain Marvel SHAZAM! And his clothes magically changed and flew to rescue the world. Mary Marvel was for girls and was not Captain Marvel Junior, as we were reminded in each edition, was "just a poor cripple. When caught by a villain, Captain Marvel it shows "Holy Moly! 'and that became our battle cry, which is even used in the church instead of' Amen '. A court case by the publishers of Superman to Captain Marvel into bankruptcy, but the artists were recruited primarily because their work was excellent. I can still see the piles Captain Marvel comics lying around the soldier tents. Today, they are worth a fortune.
Children should not enter certain buildings without permission.
Now that was like waving a red rag to a bull. We explored every inch of that field and no building near Canal Suez. We discovered a lot of interesting things when no one was around. I remember they broke into an upstairs room a hall and discovered a cache maps. All were stamped Top Secret and looked interesting so glad a few notches to change the marbles in the big school in Ismailia.
Children must be accompanied by an adult in the film field
Well, that was a non-starter. The camp had a movie theater near the front door and movies are shown two or three times a week. We would sneak in for free, and at the end of the program, collect up all the empty bottles that the soldiers had left littering the soil. The bottles had a deposit of one piastre (1p) on them and a quick cleaning could make a tidy little pocket money. At the beginning of the show, I would go to the screening room and to record a film in the collection. It was a march called Semper Fidelis fan (always faithful) by the American composer John P. Sousa and drove the album like it was gold dust. By law, the film had to play the Egyptian national anthem and show a picture of King Farouk on the screen at the end of the film. I must confess that the soldiers did not discuss this with the respect it requires, and sang a bawdy song in Arabic to accompany the anthem. We picked up words very quickly.
Children should be supervised when visiting the beaches and behave
Yes, yes, know all that. Now what I really liked to do was to dig large holes and cover them with pieces of cardboard and a layer of sand. Then, it was fun to see people walking along the beach and disappear suddenly in our hole. Or a guy would get some volunteers to sit in the hole, while it covered with sand. "You will dig me then does not it? He did and sat throwing garbage or fruit skins bit strange in the head protruding from the sand.
There was always one or two children more than questionable to pinch our drinks while we were out swimming. The best solution to this problem was to fill the cups with a safe liquid that is also a pale yellow, but nothing tastes like lemonade. Then, when the robbers overpowered her, she just could not help laughing as they took a drink and spat in disgust.
Children are strictly forbidden to swim across the Suez Canal
Even the soldiers had forbidden to do this because the other side of the channel was not under British rule, and still contains mines laid during the recent war. A little thing like that stopped us and made us regular trips to the other side and make rude gestures, and uses some of the important phrases in Arabic, the soldiers shouted angrily at us to return.
When these adventures were brought to the attention of our mother who has sent us to the camp chaplain or commander in chief should be punished. We were absolutely terrified by the RC chaplain who was a bully and very fond of drink, but found the camp commander, Captain Hall, a very decent. The first would rant and threaten us with all sorts of blows, while the Captain Hall send us your son, Carl, to collect garbage. Hazel was very interested in your child, so this was not a punishment for her. To avoid the priest, who asked our mother sends Captain Hall, and of course did. Later, he was dismissed from the army, but that was not our fault.
Keep children away from the ships passing through channel.
Now what I had in mind was the danger of our being absorbed by the propeller or injured by washing followed by a boat up the canal. But if we U.S. naval ship to us, we are not stopped. "Give us a piece of gum, dude!" you notice as they plunged into the water and showered with candy from generous Americans. From time to time shouting, "Hey, where are you from? And in our best English he would answer" We are Egyptians. We live here. "I always wanted a hat with a U.S. Navy sailor (pork pie), but whenever they did, they were absorbed as part of the propellers and although I searched in the wake of the ship, never reappeared.
Our most exciting day was when all traffic on the canal was stopped due to a collision in the south. Vessels moored to the canal side moorings and walkways with large fell to benefit crew members who wanted to take a bath. It was an envoy sky opportunity and we made full use of it. Amercan a cargo ship, the Cape and Rac Isbrandsten Line moored almost opposite the camp and dashes of a mile through the sand to inspect in more detail. Cape Race was what is known as a Liberty ship. These cargo ships were built quickly and cheap during WW2 on the basis that many of them would be sunk by German submarines. Despite its cheap construction, which survived for many years after war. Seeing the low bridge, he jumped into the water and struck the ship. Observation we paddled around the foot of the stairs, the captain invited us on board and spend an hour or two to inspect every inch of the ship, talking with sailors and ask lots of questions. U.S. sailors were puzzled to the accents. "Well, children speak English as well. "This time, however, does not pretend to be Egyptians and happily accepted his generous donations of candy and chocolates before to return to shore. Since then, I was hooked on ships and was determined to work on them, they finally did.
Now here is a small strange thing. As our father had been captain of the Pioneers (a body of work that included two thousand Germans), which is based in the rooms of the officers. Sometimes other kids in the neighborhood would say, 'Your father may have been an officer. You do not speak as 'official' children. How mother frets over her offspring boar when he heard that comment. A year later, I was watching a football match in Sheffield and made a comment about some boys play with me. "Where are you, then," said one of them, because you speak well of luxury. "
Over time, Hazel was sent to boarding school in Cairo to improve their behavior and become a young man. However, the Suez Canal Zone was not a place safe place to live, the British military presence severely vexed the Egyptians who wanted more control over their channel. The camps were under attack and people die. I was sent to military school in England, where most of the children were orphans or their parents were away. After the release of a desert hedgehog was like being in prison. The use of boots and a khaki uniform uncomfortable, I shivered in the cold and longed for the warmth of the desert sun. I made my mind to leave that place as soon as possible and go to sea.
At school, I met one of the children in the camp. When one of the teachers discovered that he had lived in Egypt, We have to sit cross-legged in front of Esch other in an assembly and carry out a conversation in Arabic. We sat there the exchange of all important Arabic phrases he had picked up the soldiers, and, of course, the gestures that went with them. Everyone was impressesd and we were warmly applauded. If only I knew what we were saying it would have been grounded for weeks.
