How do you stop a whining dog/puppy?

I got a puppy today and she has a habit of whining… especially if we leave the house. I live in a hotel-style apartment with tile floors and long narrow hallways so the sound echos. I will stand outside the door to see how see reacts when we leave and she will continue to cry and bark.

Of course she’s crying! You only got her today! Give her some time to adjust to you and your new home. When I got my puppy it took him about a week before he was relaxed when I left the house. Just give her time!

You can train her to be quiet but, this barking and crying is normal for a new puppy. They’re scared. They need you for comfornt since they left their mom, litter mates, and wherever you got them. Later you can control their barking at other objects with “quiet” by learning it in classes. Right now it’s normal!

Some thing really good you could do is crate your new puppy or block him off to a portion of the house (provided you’re not gone an extreme amount of time.) Give him access to food and water of course but, know they will not go to the bathroom if they’re in their cage and will need you to let them out. By crating or blocking them off in a certain area it gives them a more calming feeling. They’re in an area and not so stressed about the WHOLE house.

Make sure you give him toys and leave a shirt or something with your scent on it. Another idea is playing music for your new friend.

REMEBER: he’s just a puppy! You’ve entered a new world with your friend and it takes time and paticene for a new puppy. They’ve got a lot to learn.

RIGHT NOW…enjoy the time of bonding w/ your new friend. Don’t expect them to be self-reliant because if that’s what you need then you should get a cat. Love your new friend and in a week or two they should be calm when you leave. Enroll in pet training classes and in a month of going to classes they should have all the tricks you want down.

I’ve had my puppy almost a year and we’re still leaning new things together. Our latest is “catch”. Enjoy and give your friend time to learn and grow!!
